John Dickson | artist statement
In my work I examine humanity's relationship with the physical world through the creation of simplified systems that explore the interface between the natural and the cultural. The bulk of my work has investigated the various physical and conceptual possibilities of water. Water represents a natural force associated with randomness, chaos, the body, and the unconscious. Much of my interest in water arose from its unpredictable and irrational nature, which is often at odds with humanity's desire for stability and constancy. This conflict often manifests itself in the work through representations of calamity and disaster.
